Tragedy struck the Rewa-Mirzapur National Highway in Mirzapur when a brake-failed truck triggered a multi-vehicle pile-up, killing 11 people on Wednesday evening. Nine of the victims burned alive inside a Bolero SUV, in one of the deadliest accidents on this stretch.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed profound sorrow via X, calling the incident ‘heart-wrenching.’ He assured comprehensive medical care for the wounded and invoked blessings from Lord Ram for the souls of the deceased and solace for their families.
Eyewitnesses described the horrifying sequence: At Drummondganj Ghat’s slope, the overloaded chickpea truck from Madhya Pradesh barreled down after brakes gave way around 8:30 PM. It crushed the Bolero, propelling it into a gravel truck and igniting a massive blaze. Moments later, another truck rammed a sedan from behind, amplifying the devastation.
Rescue operations swung into action immediately, with firefighters battling the inferno and locals assisting in pulling out the trapped. Several injured are under critical care in hospitals.
The confirmed fatalities include members of interconnected families: From Satna – Priyanka Singh, 42, and son Kartikeya, 19; from Jigna – teenagers Piyush Singh, 14, and young adults Pankaj, Beena, Vandana, Shiva, and Sonam Singh; Vishnu Singh from Rampur, Vikas Sharma from Neya Kheda, and Jay Prakash from Bhatyagaon. The news has devastated villages across Madhya Pradesh and UP borders.
As probes intensify, focus sharpens on heavy vehicle maintenance and road safety protocols in ghat sections. Community leaders urge immediate black spot elimination and advanced signaling to prevent repeats of such nightmares.
