Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to Resign Amidst Mounting Pressure Following Election Loss

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has decided to resign to avoid further division within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Ishiba’s resignation comes just a year after assuming the premiership. The decision follows the LDP’s significant loss in the parliamentary elections held in July, which triggered calls for his departure. Ishiba, however, has not specified the exact date of his resignation.

Ishiba took office in October of the previous year. For the past month, he has been facing opposition from right-wing factions within his own party. The ruling coalition led by Ishiba failed to secure a majority in the upper house, comprising 248 seats, during the July parliamentary elections.
