In a landmark expansion, IIT Madras’s Zanzibar campus in Tanzania has announced admissions for 2026, building on the stellar 100% placement success of its debut MTech cohort. This unique IIT abroad is drawing ambitious students from across East Africa and further afield.

Programs span BS and MTech in data science, AI, engineering, and the newly introduced chemical process engineering—designed to fuel Africa’s growing industries. Over 129 learners from nations like Tanzania (majority), Ethiopia, Zambia, and Kenya are already thriving here, with women making up a significant share.

Launched in 2023 with backing from Indian, Tanzanian, and Zanzibar authorities, the campus started with temporary facilities in Bwelo. A state-of-the-art permanent site on Fumba Peninsula is under rapid development, complete with fresh hostels opened in January 2026.

IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti hailed the initiative as a point of pride, thanking Zanzibar’s government for their partnership. Dean of Global Engagements Prof. Preeti Aghalayam highlighted collaborations with industries and academia, offering students global opportunities. Under new Director-in-Charge Prof. Prabhu Rajagopal, the campus notched full placements and eyes PhD intake soon.

Innovation is at the core: centers for entrepreneurship and applied research are emerging, alongside student internships and conference presentations. Key dates include MTech screening on April 26, 2026, and BS tests on June 6 across India and international venues.

This venture isn’t just education—it’s a catalyst for East African tech ecosystems. Visit the admissions portal for details on eligibility, prep, and campus life. IIT Madras Zanzibar is redefining engineering frontiers on the continent.
