Father Prakash Defends Pope Against Trump’s Attacks

The rift between US President Donald Trump and Pope Leo XIV deepened dramatically after Trump’s explosive late-night broadside on social media. Branding the Pope as ‘soft on crime’ and detrimental to US foreign interests, Trump also alleged radical leftist sway over the Vatican leader. From Ahmedabad, Catholic priest Father Cedric Prakash fired back, rallying Christian supporters who see the Pope’s peace pleas as profound strength, not weakness.

In an IANS interview, Prakash unpacked the Pope’s universal message. ‘Trump misunderstands the Pope’s role,’ he said. ‘It’s not confined to Christians; it’s a clarion call to humanity.’ Drawing from Jesus’ example, the priest outlined three pillars: outright rejection of war, hatred, and violence; relentless pursuit of dialogue among global powers including America, Israel, and Iran; and an unwavering demand for worldwide peace.

Prakash expressed deep offense at Trump’s claim that the Pope weakens America’s stance abroad. ‘How does promoting fearless peace diminish foreign policy?’ he challenged. Far from feeble, Pope Leo—self-identifying with Peru yet raised in Chicago—stands as a formidable advocate for non-violence and justice. This isn’t a spat between two Americans, Prakash clarified, but a profound ideological battle: one side preaches love and harmony, the other fuels division and aggression.

Trump’s post further stirred outrage by suggesting the Pope’s election hinged on his own influence. Christian voices worldwide decry this as disrespectful, underscoring the Pope’s independent moral compass. As geopolitical flashpoints like the Middle East persist, the Pope’s appeals for negotiation gain urgency, contrasting sharply with Trump’s combative posture and highlighting a critical divide in leadership philosophies.
