Deadly Ambush on Polio Escort in Pakistan’s Hangu: Officer Dead, 4 Hurt

Violence marred Pakistan’s latest polio vaccination campaign from the outset as gunmen struck a police escort in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Hangu district, killing one constable and injuring four on April 13. The assault in Thal tehsil targeted officers heading to secure health teams amid the ongoing 13-19 April drive.

According to district police, unknown attackers unleashed a barrage of bullets on the convoy. The brave constable died at the scene, and the injured were swiftly evacuated to medical facilities. A comprehensive manhunt ensued, with checkpoints erected and intelligence operations ramped up to apprehend the culprits.

This brazen attack highlights the entrenched challenges in Pakistan’s battle against wild poliovirus, one of the last bastions alongside Afghanistan. The virus lurks in environmental sources, leading to paralysis outbreaks that vaccination alone can prevent.

Recurring incidents plague the northwest. In February, Balochistan saw a policeman slain protecting vaccinators in Chaman. Lahore witnessed parental fury turning violent, with polio teams attacked over refusals to administer drops.

In Harbanspura, locals blocked vaccinations, assaulted staff, and summoned allies for further abuse until police arrived. Shahdara police filed charges against parents harassing female health workers. Such resistance, often rooted in conspiracy theories, endangers national health goals.

Data from 2012 reveals 96 fatalities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone: 61 cops, 7 medics, 5 bystanders. Injuries number 170, including 124 officers, plus 32 health workers, 3 civilians, and 1 cop abducted during campaigns. These losses reflect militant sabotage of global health efforts.

Policymakers must enhance protections, deploy advanced surveillance, and launch awareness drives to shield workers and vaccinate every child, turning the tide against this preventable scourge.
