Ecuador Trade Feud: Colombia Hikes Tariffs to 100% in Retaliation

In a bold counterstrike, Colombia’s Trade Ministry has declared it will impose 100% tariffs on all imports from Ecuador, up from the previous 30%. The decision mirrors Quito’s aggressive tariff escalation announced yesterday, as bilateral relations sour rapidly.

Minister Diana Morales laid out the rationale during a press briefing. Ecuador’s doubling of duties from 50% to 100% compelled Colombia to respond in kind, she said, describing the tit-for-tat as detrimental to producers in both economies. ‘We’ve exhausted diplomatic options,’ Morales stated. ‘Talks with Ecuador aimed at mutual gains for nations, merchants, and frontier residents yielded nothing. Thus, we’re aligning our measures with their new levels.’

Bogotá plans immediate relief for impacted sectors through new credit facilities and funding programs. The backdrop includes Ecuador’s complaints about trade imbalances and inadequate action against narcotics smuggling along the border, allegations rejected outright by Colombian officials.

Adding fuel to the fire: President Gustavo Petro’s recent comments branding jailed Ecuadorian ex-Vice President Jorge Glas as a political prisoner, demanding his freedom. This has widened the rift.

With Petro’s presidency—marked by his historic rise as Colombia’s first left-wing commander-in-chief and ex-rebel—nearing its end after the 2022 election, these disputes test his foreign policy legacy. The shared history of armed strife in Colombia looms large, even as economic pressures mount. Stakeholders fear prolonged standoffs could disrupt supply chains and inflate costs region-wide.
