In a series of strategic diplomatic moves, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar convened with Nepal and Bhutan foreign ministers during the 9th Indian Ocean Conference in Port Louis on April 10. The meetings highlighted India’s unwavering commitment to nurturing robust relationships with its Himalayan neighbors.
Jaishankar’s conversation with Bhutanese counterpart DN Dhungyel was marked by optimism about their evolving partnership. ‘Our special and trusted partnership continues to grow from strength to strength,’ he shared on social media, capturing the essence of a bond that transcends borders through shared history and development goals.
The agenda with Nepal’s Shishir Khanal delved into multifaceted cooperation to realize the untapped potential of India-Nepal relations. This inaugural meeting post-Khanal’s appointment focused on key areas like connectivity, energy, and people-to-people ties. Nepal’s ministry confirmed discussions on mutual interests, with both reaffirming dedication to elevated collaboration.
Beyond these, Jaishankar’s itinerary included talks with Seychelles’ Barry Faure on economic support and a courtesy call on Mauritius President Dharamvir Gokhool. Delivering personal messages from PM Modi and President Murmu, he emphasized the enduring friendship that defines India-Mauritius relations.
Held against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean’s strategic importance, the conference provides a vital platform for India to advance its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. These interactions not only reinforce bilateral frameworks but also contribute to a cohesive regional architecture, addressing common challenges like climate change, trade disruptions, and security concerns. As Jaishankar wraps up his visit, the outcomes promise accelerated momentum in South Asian diplomacy.
