In a significant diplomatic engagement at the 9th Indian Ocean Conference in Port Louis, India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met Seychelles’ Foreign Minister Barry Faure. The Friday meeting focused on strategies to support Seychelles amid its economic difficulties, with India pledging continued assistance.
Jaishankar shared on social media platform X: ‘Great meeting with Seychelles FM Barry Faure on the occasion of the 9th Indian Ocean Conference. India remains committed to helping Seychelles recover from its current economic challenges. Welcome the steps taken for implementation of the Special Economic Package.’
The minister’s Mauritius itinerary includes conference participation, bilateral discussions, and a comprehensive review of India-Mauritius partnership with Mauritian officials.
Just days earlier, India shipped 250 metric tons of food grains to Seychelles as part of the $175 million special economic package announced earlier. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted on X that further aid will follow, ensuring sustained support.
This aid package stems from high-level interactions, including President Wavel Ramkalawan’s predecessor Patrick Hermin’s February trip to New Delhi. Hermin appreciated India’s multifaceted aid in development and security during his meeting with PM Modi.
The leaders explored digital transformation opportunities, with India committing to DPI development, including digital payments, to enhance Seychelles’ governance.
Framed by the SESEL joint vision, the partnership prioritizes sustainability, economic growth, security, maritime safety, and inclusive development. The economic package comprises loans and grants to drive projects, training, and security initiatives.
India’s proactive stance reinforces its position as a steadfast ally in the Indian Ocean region, fostering mutual prosperity and stability.
