Ningbo witnessed a badminton masterclass as Aayush Shetty from India pulled off a major shock by beating Jonathan Christie, the fourth-ranked player globally, to storm into the semifinals of the Badminton Asia Championships. The straight-sets victory of 23-21, 21-17 not only assured a medal but also etched Shetty’s name in history as the first Indian men’s singles player to secure a podium finish here since 2018.
From the outset, the first game was intensely contested. Christie edged ahead 11-10, then surged to 18-15 with a game point in sight. But Shetty, displaying nerves of steel, leveled the score and snatched the game in a thrilling decider.
Building on that momentum, Shetty dominated the second game. He led 11-9 at the changeover and never looked back, outmaneuvering Christie with precise shots and relentless pressure to win 21-17. This breakthrough win over the Indonesian star underscores Shetty’s rising prowess on the international stage.
Earlier in the tournament, Shetty dismantled world No. 7 Li Shifeng and Chou Yu-chen to reach the quarters. His semifinal opponent will emerge from the clash between Olympic silver medalist Kunlavut Vitidsarn and Weng Hong Yang. PV Sindhu bowed out in round two, while Lakshya Sen fell early.
Shetty’s achievement follows the 2023 men’s doubles gold by Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, signaling a strong resurgence for Indian shuttlers in Asia. Fans are now eyeing a potential medal upgrade as Shetty prepares for the business end of the championship.
