In a pivotal move for national energy security, Mahagenco has commenced the inaugural dispatch of coal from its Gare Pelma Sector-2 mine in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district. The coal is earmarked for Maharashtra’s power generation units, marking a strategic step in reducing import dependence.
As Maharashtra’s premier public utility for electricity production, Mahagenco’s development of this block guarantees a reliable feedstock for thermal plants, stabilizing power output and curbing supply chain vulnerabilities.
With vast reserves totaling 655.15 million tonnes and a peak output of 23.6 million tonnes per year, the operation is expected to pour ₹29,000 crore into Chhattisgarh’s coffers via royalties, DMF contributions, GST, and related revenues over its lifespan.
Job creation is another highlight, with more than 3,400 direct positions and a multiplier effect generating indirect employment in logistics, building, services, and support sectors. This economic ripple will empower local populations and stimulate growth.
Corporate social responsibility forms the bedrock of the project. An upfront ₹35 crore CSR budget targets healthcare, schooling, hygiene, basic amenities, and vocational training. Ongoing commitments include 2% of annual net profits for community projects, alongside robust rehabilitation for 1,679 households in 14 villages.
Sustainability efforts include developing green buffers, massive tree-planting drives, emission controls, water management strategies, and land restoration post-extraction. These proactive steps mitigate environmental impacts, fostering harmony between mining and nature.
The launch heralds a new era of domestic coal utilization, propelling India towards energy autonomy while prioritizing people and planet.
