Wheat Buy Delay Sparks Farmer Fury in Madhya Pradesh

In a sharp attack on the state administration, Madhya Pradesh’s opposition leader Umang Singhar has exposed the fallout from postponed wheat purchases. Kicking off on April 9 this year—unlike last year’s early March start—the delay has pushed small farmers into dire straits. Lacking godowns, they’ve offloaded crops cheaply to intermediaries, suffering massive financial hits.

‘Government decisions meant to help have backfired, funneling gains to dalals,’ Singhar charged. He cited how a potential Rs 400/quintal bonus slipped away from producers into broker hands, calling it systemic graft. Unnecessary curbs on buying volumes only amplify the disconnect between official promises and reality, he added.

Shifting gears to UCC implementation, Singhar raised alarms over marginalized communities. Dalits and tribals, he cautioned, risk cultural erasure if their traditions aren’t enshrined. ‘We demand guarantees: Will their rights endure, or be steamrolled?’ Congress pledges unwavering resistance to any discriminatory rollout.

With procurement now underway, farmers queue in frustration. Singhar’s broadside not only spotlights agrarian woes but also signals escalating political battles ahead in the heartland state, where policy delays collide with identity concerns.
