In a passionate plea from Jammu, Sunita Dhar, celebrated for her 2020 Nari Shakti Puraskar honoring disability rights work, demands that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Women’s Reservation Bill make room for persons with disabilities.
Speaking candidly, Dhar hailed the bill as a historic milestone for Indian women. She pressed for its immediate and comprehensive rollout across the nation, insisting, ‘Disabled voices need representation in Parliament to amplify our challenges effectively.’
The activist envisioned a future where women dominate seats in legislatures and local bodies, ensuring gender-specific issues receive priority attention and resolution.
Sidestepping partisan jabs at Congress, Dhar acknowledged PM Modi’s success where others faltered, urging cross-party unity. ‘This bill will redefine parliamentary empowerment with women at the helm,’ she forecasted.
Turning to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s budget, Dhar commended its progressive stance but advocated for enhanced provisions targeting disability welfare. Expressing deep thanks to the Prime Minister, she noted her award reception in 2022 despite its 2020 bestowal.
Dhar’s advocacy underscores a broader call for intersectional inclusion, blending gender and disability rights in India’s legislative evolution.
