The fragile truce between the US and Iran has sparked diverse responses in Jammu and Kashmir’s political circles. PDP president Mehbooba Mufti celebrated it as a beacon of hope for Muslims globally, spotlighting Pakistan’s instrumental role in de-escalating tensions that threatened wider turmoil.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Mufti underscored the significance of dialogue. ‘This willingness to talk is excellent news, and Pakistan’s contribution in averting full-scale war deserves recognition,’ she said. She lauded Iran’s disciplined retaliation, which targeted only strategic military sites while adversaries bombed civilian hubs like schools and hospitals.
The former chief minister recounted the grim attacks on Iranian infrastructure—destroyed bridges, power stations, and educational facilities where innocents perished. ‘Iran showed remarkable restraint and bravery,’ Mufti noted, calling on the international community to ensure the ceasefire holds permanently, allowing Iran to rebuild.
Farooq Abdullah of the National Conference echoed calls for peace but with a sharper critique. ‘Wars bring only devastation, as seen in Israel’s losses. What good comes from such fights?’ he asked, advocating an end to hostilities that amplify suffering without resolution.
Mufti also addressed party developments, warmly inducting new members, especially youth burdened by joblessness and harassment. Police summons and arrests for online activity have created a climate of fear, she observed. ‘Youth joining PDP is a welcome sign; together, we can champion their cause in these suffocating times,’ she affirmed.
