New Delhi’s policy corridors buzzed with activity as the Cabinet, under PM Modi’s leadership, gave the thumbs up to a whopping Rs 41,533.81 crore subsidy package for phosphate and potash fertilizers tailored for Kharif 2026. This nutrient-based subsidy (NBS) framework, effective from April 1 to September 30, 2026, surpasses the previous season’s allocation by over Rs 4,300 crore.
Why the hike? Recent global price swings in fertilizers like DAP, MOP, and sulfur have necessitated this adjustment to keep costs in check for Indian growers. The Department of Fertilizers’ proposal ensures DAP, NPKS, and other P&K variants remain pocket-friendly, empowering farmers to optimize soil nutrition without breaking the bank.
Since 2010, the NBS regime has been a cornerstone of India’s agricultural support system, channeling subsidies through producers to deliver 28 fertilizer types at concessional rates. This latest approval aligns perfectly with that vision, promising seamless availability during the peak sowing period.
Agriculture analysts point out that such interventions are vital amid geopolitical tensions affecting commodity markets. By locking in these rates, the government not only safeguards farmer incomes but also promotes sustainable practices like balanced nutrient application.
