China has notched a historic first with the completion of its inaugural self-developed 180,000 cubic meter LNG carrier in Nantong, Jiangsu. Fully meeting delivery terms, this behemoth represents a breakthrough in China’s quest to master high-end shipbuilding, particularly for eco-friendly energy transporters.

Built by China Merchants Industry, the vessel measures 298.8 meters long and 48 meters wide, equipped with an advanced dual-fuel propulsion setup. This technology ensures low vaporization and top-tier emissions standards, making it ideal for long-haul LNG voyages. As the biggest such ship ever delivered in China, it signals the maturity of domestic capabilities in constructing supersized clean energy carriers.

These specialized tankers handle ultra-cold LNG at -163°C, requiring precision engineering that earns them the moniker ‘pearl of the shipbuilding crown.’ Globally, only elite firms possess the expertise. China’s entry into this league with five capable yards now catapults its LNG carrier production to international prominence.

This development comes at a pivotal time, as global trade in LNG accelerates to meet decarbonization goals. Chinese shipbuilders are poised to capture market share, driving economic growth and enhancing energy security through reliable, green transport solutions.
