A wave of youthful enthusiasm is sweeping Tamil Nadu’s electoral rolls. First-time voters in the 18-19 age group have swelled by over 33 percent, reaching 14.6 lakh from 10.9 lakh in the 2024 parliamentary elections, as per Wednesday’s release from the state election authority.

Total voters now number 5.73 crore, a modest uptick from 5.67 crore post-SIR, thanks to 6.36 lakh new registrations by the April 6 deadline. This influx, driven by post-February 13 Form 6 filings, positions these voters to influence the assembly elections decisively.

Their share in the electorate has climbed to 2.5 percent despite SIR trimming the total from 6.23 crore. Officials note that while deletions affected all groups, the sharp absolute increase signals strong youth mobilization in recent weeks. About one-third of new additions are first-timers, propelling the count from 12.59 lakh.

The SIR overhaul began with 6.41 crore voters pre-October 2025 revisions. December’s census phase axed 97.34 lakh names, hitting 5.44 crore, before claims and objections restored it to 5.67 crore. Gender breakdown shows 2.93 crore women outpacing 2.80 crore men by 12.74 lakh, with 7,728 trans voters. Only Dharmapuri bucks the female majority trend.

This demographic pivot—youth surge amid stable gender leads—promises to energize campaigns. Political parties may pivot toward digital outreach and youth issues, making these elections a test of generational engagement in Tamil Nadu’s vibrant democracy.
