The government is working towards establishing women in self-reliant and decision-making roles.

Raipur, March 7, 2026 / The aim of women’s empowerment in India is to make women socially, economically, and politically independent, educated, and possess equal rights. Initiatives like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Mudra Yojana, and Women’s Reservation have increased their participation in decision-making processes. Although patriarchal thinking and safety challenges still exist, changes are occurring through education and legal reforms.

The concept of women’s empowerment in India has now evolved into a comprehensive, life-cycle-based approach, addressing women’s needs holistically from birth to education, health, livelihood, and leadership. Various schemes run by the Government of India are no longer limited to welfare but are working towards establishing women in self-reliant and decision-making roles. This transition reflects India’s development journey from “Welfare” to “Empowerment” and now to “Women-Led Development”.

In the field of health and nutrition, initiatives like Mission Poshan 2.0, Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, and Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan have ensured significant improvements. From 2017 to February 2026, approximately 4.27 crore women have received conditional assistance of ₹20,101 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana. Meanwhile, over 7.26 crore pregnant women have received free check-ups under the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan. Nutrition services are reaching more than 8.97 crore beneficiaries through 14.03 lakh Anganwadi centers across the country, while the impact of Mission Indradhanush has led to a decrease in child mortality rate from 48 to 28 and infant mortality rate from 28 to 17.

Under the “Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi” program, 8.55 lakh workers have been trained, and 1.03 lakh centers have been upgraded through the Saksham Anganwadi scheme. In the area of financial inclusion, Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, and Stand-Up India scheme have played a crucial role in economically empowering women.

Out of 57.93 crore accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, 32.29 crore accounts are in the names of women, which is a major achievement towards financial inclusion. Approximately 68 percent of the total loans disbursed under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana have been given to women, amounting to over ₹14.72 lakh crore. Women constitute 83 percent of the beneficiaries for loans sanctioned under the Stand-Up India scheme, with an amount exceeding ₹47,704 crore.

Under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana, National Rural Livelihood Mission, 10.05 crore women have joined Self-Help Groups, while through the “Lakhpati Didi” initiative, 3.07 crore women are progressing towards self-reliance. Under the “Namo Drone Didi Yojana”, 1,094 drones have been distributed, connecting women with modern technology.

To ensure dignity in daily life, schemes like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin), Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, Swachh Bharat Mission, and Jal Jeevan Mission have brought about significant changes. Over 2.90 crore houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin have been allocated in the names of women, bolstering their social and economic empowerment. Over 10.5 crore gas connections have been provided under the Ujjwala Yojana, offering women freedom from smoke and health benefits. Over 12.11 crore toilets have been constructed under the Swachh Bharat Mission, ensuring the dignity and safety of women. Through the Jal Jeevan Mission, tap water facility has reached over 15.83 crore households, leading to a significant reduction in women’s daily labor.

In the field of education and skill development, initiatives like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya have ensured positive changes. As a result of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign, the sex ratio at birth has increased from 918 to 929. Over 4.6 crore accounts have been opened under the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, with over ₹3.40 lakh crore deposited. Over 7.58 lakh girl students are studying in 5,316 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas. The Gross Enrolment Ratio of women in higher education has reached 30.2 percent, while the enrolment of women in PhD has seen a growth of 135.6 percent. Under the AICTE Pragati scheme, 35,998 girl students have benefited, and over 80,000 girl students have received encouragement from the Vigyan Jyoti scheme.

For the safety and security of women, Mission Shakti is being implemented under two pillars: “Sambal” and “Samarthya”. The number of One Stop Centers has reached 926, where more than 13.90 lakh women have been provided assistance. Women have received support through the Women Helpline (181 and 112) for 99.09 lakh women. 1.63 lakh workplaces are linked to the SHe-Box portal, ensuring women’s safety at the workplace. Under the “Samarthya” component, 416 Shakti Sadan and 531 Sakhi Niwas are operational, providing safe shelter and rehabilitation to women.

Ultimately, women’s empowerment in India is no longer just the implementation of schemes but has become the foundation of a comprehensive socio-economic transformation. Today, women are not only the pivot of their families and society but are also playing a leading role in determining the direction of the country’s economic, social, and technological progress. This is the true form of “Women-Led Development”, where women’s power forms the basis of national strength.
