US Vice President JD Vance stated that President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on India to exert pressure on Russia to halt the war. Vance explained that the decision aimed to diminish Russia’s oil export revenue and weaken its economy.

Specifically, the US has imposed a 50% tariff on India, effective August 27th, with 25% as a penalty. This penalty stems from India’s oil purchases from Russia, creating trade tensions between the two countries.

India has consistently defended its decision to import oil from Russia, citing it as being in the national interest. Following the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Western nations and imposed sanctions on Russia, prompting India to acquire Russian oil at discounted prices.
