Zelenskyy Urges US Support as Russia Targets Ukraine's Energy Grid
Ukraine’s national security apparatus and civilian infrastructure are reeling from a massive Russian aerial campaign. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed that Moscow deployed 172 drones and 36 ballistic missiles during Friday night’s assault. Intelligence assessments confirm that all ballistic projectiles were aimed squarely at Kyiv and the surrounding districts, with the nation’s power distribution network serving as the primary objective.
The president detailed the escalation on X, noting the tactical timing relative to upcoming trilateral summit preparations. The strikes have immediately crippled Kyiv’s municipal services. Power outages, water scarcity, and heating failures have become widespread. Urban infrastructure has also borne the brunt, with housing estates damaged, the Northern Bridge structurally affected, and a preschool facility partially demolished.
Provincial regions have not escaped the fury. Attackers successfully targeted a critical substation responsible for transmitting power from the Rivne and Khmelnytsky nuclear plants to Kyiv and central zones. Additional grid collapses were reported in Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Rivne, Kharkiv, and Dnipro oblasts. The wave of attacks encompassed twelve extra regions, resulting in nine recorded injuries, including a young child.
Zelenskyy used the platform to honor the resilience of Ukraine’s defenders, reconstruction crews, and citizens enduring harsh winter conditions. He issued a stark geopolitical warning, asserting that the Ukrainian state must not be left to face a deliberate campaign to extinguish electricity across major population centers.
Diplomatic channels are being heavily leveraged to secure additional aid. Zelenskyy called for enhanced bilateral partnerships with Washington and pressed the US Congress to keep the conflict at the forefront of legislative agendas. He noted a clear pattern of Russia escalating its strike volume, reinforcing the need for unwavering international solidarity.
He advocated for Ukraine to remain a top-tier priority in American strategic planning. Zelenskyy anticipated strong bipartisan alignment within the United States on safeguarding Ukrainian sovereignty, financing military aid, denouncing Russian hostilities, and escalating economic sanctions against Vladimir Putin. He concluded that consistent American backing is indispensable for forging a credible and lasting peace in Eastern Europe.
