Zelensky Calls for More Air Defence After Russian Strikes on Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned a fresh wave of Russian ballistic missile attacks that struck Kyiv and other regions, leaving two dead and 34 people wounded, including five children.
According to Zelensky, Russia carried out the strikes in three stages starting Wednesday evening, using 21 ballistic missiles in total. The attacks affected 12 regions across Ukraine overnight.
Sharing the details on X, the president said Kyiv sustained heavy damage. Residential buildings, energy facilities, a railway station, metro-related infrastructure, a shopping centre, commercial outlets and other buildings were affected. A monastery was among the sites hit.
Rescue and emergency teams are currently working across the impacted areas, he said.
Zelensky extended sympathy to the relatives and loved ones of the deceased. He said the attack came immediately after another round of talks, which he described as proof that Russia has not shifted its position in any meaningful way.
While stressing the need to find the right solution to end the conflict, Zelensky said Russia must be pressed through concrete measures when it answers diplomacy with ballistic missile fire. He said Moscow must be pushed to stop the killings and act differently.
He repeated his appeal for a stronger air defence system, a faster supply of missiles capable of neutralising ballistic missile launchers, and continued sanctions against Russia.
Zelensky thanked the countries and people who understand the seriousness of the situation and acknowledge reality, saying the aggressor must receive an appropriate response, Ukraine must be backed, and people's lives must be safeguarded.
