Zambia’s election commission declares Hichilema winner with over 2.9 million votes

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) officially declared President Hakainde Hichilema the winner of the recent presidential election, confirming that he secured more than 2.9 million valid votes, accounting for over 50 % of the total votes cast. The result gave Hichilema a clear majority, eliminating the need for a runoff under the constitution.

While some constituency results were still pending, the commission assured that the outstanding figures would not alter the overall outcome. The vote count had briefly been halted due to isolated incidents of violence and ballot‑theft, but resumed once security conditions were restored.
