Xi and Steinmeier Discuss Ties, Trade and Global Governance

Beijing, October 31: Chinese President Xi Jinping and visiting German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier held talks in Beijing on the afternoon of October 30, focusing on bilateral relations, the China-EU partnership and the direction of global economic governance.

Opening the discussions, Xi said that China-Germany ties have sustained high-quality development for more than fifty years since diplomatic relations were established. He described the two countries as trusted friends and steadfast partners.

Xi pointed out that China and Germany are the second and third largest economies globally. Because of this position, he said, both countries have a major stake in the progress of China-EU relations and in worldwide economic expansion. He proposed deeper communication and coordination to build a model of cooperation founded on equal treatment, shared gains and strategic stability.

The Chinese president called on both nations to reject seclusion and rivalry and to instead send a positive signal of openness and partnership. He affirmed that China is willing to add a new chapter to the four-dimensional strategic partnership with Germany and to push for a more equitable and fair global governance order.

Xi stressed that the continuity of policy is precious. He voiced the hope that Germany, viewing China's development and cooperation with an open and positive attitude, would remain committed to a wise, practical and friendly China policy. He also urged Germany to uphold mutual respect and equal treatment, saying these are valuable lessons for the sound growth of China-Germany relations.

Additionally, Xi said China always regards the EU as a partner and seeks to develop relations on the basis of friendliness and goodwill. He expressed hope that the EU would join China in advancing global multipolarity and inclusive economic globalization.

Steinmeier responded that relations between Germany and China are intimate, mutually advantageous and full of vitality. He said Germany continues to follow the one-China policy and is confident about the future of the bilateral relationship.

The German president also said Germany is prepared to share responsibility with China for global peace and development, to support free trade and WTO regulations, and to oppose protectionism and trade wars.
