WHO Director‑General Race Sees Chinese Candidate Dr. Sung Lee Enter Contest
The People's Republic of China has officially entered Dr. Sung Lee into the race for the World Health Organization’s top post. The nomination was revealed at a regular briefing by Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning on October 8.
According to Mao, the WHO’s role in global health governance and coordination is more critical than ever, as the institution confronts the pressures of weakened multilateralism and rising health challenges worldwide. She pointed out that the Director‑General’s influence is essential for ensuring the organization’s enduring development and effective response to crises.
China’s endorsement of Dr. Lee reflects its desire to expand a cooperative health community that includes diverse stakeholders. The announcement affirmed China’s steadfast support for multilateral health initiatives and the WHO’s mission, expressing confidence that Dr. Lee’s election would enable the agency to adopt a more proactive stance in promoting global health welfare.
