Washington conditions Saudi civil nuclear agreement on regional normalization

The Trump administration reiterated that the civil nuclear pact with Saudi Arabia is tied to the kingdom’s acceptance of the Abraham Accords. Trump wrote that the United States does not object to non‑military nuclear sites and that the agreement would be limited to peaceful applications, following the same template used with Iran and the United Arab Emirates. The proposed terms would enable Riyadh to construct reactors using U.S. technology and to carry out uranium enrichment, yet it omits the surprise IAEA inspection provision that Washington has traditionally considered essential in the Iranian case. The proposal has resurfaced during both Trump’s first term and the subsequent Biden administration.
