New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Wednesday heard a petition demanding 100 percent matching of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips with EVM data. The court reserved the decision for the second time after taking information on four-five more points related to technology. The Supreme Court asked the Election Commission whether a micro controller is installed in the control unit or VVPAT? Also, answers to 4 questions on EVM have been sought from the Election Commission.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court said that it cannot control the elections or issue directions just because doubts have been raised about Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). In SC, the bench of Justice Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Dipankar Dutta clearly said that we cannot control the elections. The court said that we cannot control the functioning of any other constitutional authority. The Election Commission has cleared our doubts. We cannot change your thought process. We cannot issue orders on the basis of doubt.

The Supreme Court has sought answers to these four questions

The limit for election petitions is 30 days and hence the data in the EVM is stored for 45 days. But the limit for keeping it safe under the Act is 45 days. Might the storage period need to be extended?
