From Virginia to New York: INS Sudarshini’s Trans‑Oceanic Journey Highlights Heritage

The offshore patrol vessel INS Sudarshini embarked on a historic trans‑Oceanic cruise as part of the Lokayan‑26 programme, leaving Norfolk, Virginia on June 26 and arriving in New York on July 1. The voyage showcases India’s ancient maritime tradition while reinforcing modern naval partnerships.

En route, the ship transited the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, a waterway that once served as a crucial commercial artery for colonial traders. It then passed beneath several major Mid‑Atlantic bridges, marking a symbolic bridge between continents and cultures.

In Baltimore, the vessel welcomed Indian Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra and Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller aboard for diplomatic talks. The crew also joined the city’s Sea‑Two‑Fifty Maryland parade, a celebration that brings together naval forces from across the globe.

The Ministry of Defence highlighted that the Baltimore stop is a testament to the longstanding friendship between the Indian and U.S. navies, a relationship built on shared training, joint operations and mutual respect. The ship’s presence in New York will continue this narrative through participation in the Sea‑Fourth to One‑Fifty New York and Sea‑Boston programmes.

Earlier, from June 19 to 23, Sudarshini had taken part in the Sea‑To‑Fifty Virginia event, marching in the Parade of Ships and City Crew Parade alongside vessels from several nations, further cementing India’s role as a responsible sea‑power.
