Vientiane Reviews Price Controls as Inflation Eases to 9%

Senior ministers in Laos met in the capital this week to assess the latest economic figures and chart a path forward. Data released by the national statistics bureau showed inflation cooling to nine percent in May, yet everyday expenses still weigh heavily on residents. Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone opened the session by urging colleagues to deliver solutions that work on the ground. The cabinet examined how global market turbulence and rising logistics costs are filtering through to household budgets. Particular attention was paid to goods and services, where prices jumped 28 percent year-on-year. Housing, water, electricity, and gas costs rose more than 20 percent, while transport and communication expenses climbed 15.5 percent. To counter these pressures, the finance ministry presented plans to strengthen revenue collection and control public spending. Officials also discussed ways to keep the exchange rate stable so imported fuel remains affordable. Education reform and security preparedness were on the agenda alongside economic matters. The government wants new policies that deliver visible results before the next monthly meeting. Follow-up reviews are scheduled to track progress on price stabilization and debt management.
