USGS Reports 7.4 Quake Depth 107km Near Bogota, No Tsunami Expected

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake that struck Colombia on Monday registered a magnitude of 7.4 and originated at a depth of 107 kilometres beneath the ground near San José del Palmare in the Choco department. The quake’s epicenter was situated about 280 kilometres west of Bogotá.

The USGS also clarified that the U.S. Tsunami Warning System did not issue any tsunami alerts for this event. The absence of a warning is tied to the fact that the quake’s focus was on land rather than beneath the ocean floor, reducing the likelihood of a sea‑level surge. Seismologists will continue to analyze waveforms to confirm the final magnitude and assess any secondary risks.

Preliminary observations suggest limited damage to infrastructure, and there have been no reports of casualties so far. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, especially in the western and central regions where the shaking was most perceptible.
