US Visa Refusal Hits Iranian Delegation Ahead of UN Speech

The United States has declined to issue visas to a number of officials attached to President Masoud Pejshakian’s entourage, a development reported by Iranian state media on Monday. The decision comes just days before the Iranian head of state is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

According to the Iranian presidency, the delegation includes Vice‑President Mohammad Reza Arif, several cabinet ministers and Hujjat al‑Islam Mohsin Komei, the deputy chair of the Supreme Leader’s International Affairs Office. The visa denial, described by Tehran as an “anti‑Iranian step,” may limit the president’s ability to conduct planned bilateral meetings with US and allied officials.

Despite the setback, Pejshakian is expected to deliver his opening‑day speech on Wednesday, where he will outline Iran’s position on the ongoing six‑month conflict with the United States and broader regional security challenges. The speech will be delivered under the UNGA’s 2024 theme: “Rebuilding trust, managing change – a United Nations that works for all.”

The Iranian side hopes that the high‑profile platform of the General Assembly will provide an opportunity to seek a diplomatic resolution to the hostilities, even as the visa controversy adds a layer of complexity to the president’s diplomatic outreach.
