US Pushes for Stronger Economic Growth Agenda at G20 Finance Track
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Betsinger opened the G20 finance ministers’ talks in Asheville with a clear message: accelerating economic growth must dominate the agenda. He linked the effort to President Trump’s domestic push to reignite American expansion and urged other nations to join in creating an environment where robust growth is achievable and essential.
Betsinger, together with Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, arrived together on a joint flight, underscoring the administration’s dedication to the summit. The U.S. side emphasized the need to reduce persistent trade and economic imbalances, address the mounting government‑debt challenge, and reinforce critical supply chains that have been strained by the Iran crisis.
American officials also indicated a willingness to seek broader consensus among G20 members for stricter economic measures against Iran, although divergent views on sanctions could hinder a unified stance. The United States highlighted the importance of moving away from subsidy‑heavy models toward policies that promote productivity, technology adoption and private‑sector investment.
The message resonated with several delegations, including India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed Al‑Jadaan, who both reaffirmed their commitment to fostering development, stability and shared prosperity throughout the meeting.
