US Open to Kim Summit Only If Talks Can Deliver Results

The United States has said President Donald Trump could meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un again, but only if the discussions are likely to yield a positive and meaningful outcome. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that no meeting is currently on the calendar.

Rubio gave the remarks at the conclusion of a G20 foreign ministers' meeting. He indicated that Trump is willing to engage on issues concerning Washington, its allies, and especially South Korea. Rubio did not share any date, location, or preparatory details.

“I don't have anything to announce on that today,” he said. He stressed that, should dialogue offer firm and constructive possibilities, Trump would be ready to sit down with Kim once more. At present, however, there is no programme in place.

According to Rubio, meeting a leader does not amount to granting concessions or backing that country's policies. Trump, he said, believes dialogue is sometimes essential even amid serious disputes.

Rubio added that if North Korea is willing to address the concerns of the United States and its allies, a path to talks is available. He offered no details on possible agendas or conditions.

Turning to ties with South Korea, Rubio said visa issues would be handled bilaterally between the two countries.

He also referred to a trilateral meeting with Japan and South Korea held during the G20 summit. The three countries, he said, signed a memorandum of understanding on Arctic cooperation aimed at advancing peaceful relations, trade, and regional stability.

Trump and Kim first met in Singapore in June 2018. Their second summit took place in Hanoi, Vietnam, in February 2019, and in June 2019 the two leaders met at the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) on the Korean peninsula.
