Several members of the U.S. Congress have intensified calls to scrap the agreement. Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, joined by eleven colleagues, labeled the pact a ‘catastrophic Russian diesel deal’ that betrays both American security and the brave Ukrainians fighting Russia.
Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina called the decision a mistake, while Rep. Greg Stanton of Arizona warned that the plan is likely illegal and will do little to lower fuel costs. Rep. Mike Levin of California described the arrangement as a lifeline for Russia’s war machine, citing a New York Times analysis that could channel up to $4 billion of American money into the Russian economy.
