US Hosts G20 Foreign Ministers in Atlanta Ahead of Miami Summit

Atlanta is set to become the venue for a key G20 diplomatic meeting later this week. The United States will host foreign ministers from the group's major economies on October 30 and 31, according to an announcement made by the State Department on Monday.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead the host country's delegation. The agenda covers freedom of navigation at sea, energy and food security, and the protection of global supply chains.

The Atlanta meeting is the final major ministerial session before the G20 leaders gather in Miami in December. The summit will be hosted by President Donald Trump.

Washington says its approach to the G20 is rooted in the group's original economic purpose. Officials point to three aims: boosting economic growth, strengthening economic security, and delivering concrete benefits for American workers and families.

The foreign ministers are expected to discuss practical ways to cooperate on shared economic and security challenges. The United States has put maritime security, energy and food supply, and supply chain stability at the centre of the talks.

The State Department said the US will engage G20 partners on geopolitical crises that affect the global economy. These include threats to shipping lanes, risks to energy and food supply, and constraints on supply chains.

The department emphasised that global security and economic prosperity are closely connected. It said the outcomes of the Atlanta discussions will help shape the December summit and its wider economic programme.

It also called Atlanta an important global centre for diplomacy, connectivity, and trade.

The State Department has not yet released a list of confirmed attendees or a schedule for bilateral meetings.

India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is expected to attend. A Quad foreign ministers' meeting between India, the US, Japan, and Australia is also likely during the event.

Maritime routes and energy security are receiving special attention as US military operations against Iran continue to create uncertainty in global fuel markets. Supply chain strengthening has been a major area of India-US cooperation, and the Quad has regularly discussed it as well.

In May, the State Department had said the Atlanta meeting would focus on international cooperation, solutions to global economic challenges, open markets, and robust supply chains.

The US holds the G20 presidency in 2026 and has identified affordable, secure energy and technological innovation as key priorities. The leaders' summit is scheduled for December 14 and 15 at Trump National Doral in Miami.

The G20 consists of 19 countries, the European Union, and the African Union. Together they represent most of the world's economic activity and global trade. India held the G20 presidency in 2023.
