US‑Canada ‘Operation Hardball’ Targets Barar and Linked Crime Network

Law enforcement agencies from the United States and Canada have intensified “Operation Hardball,” a multi‑year crackdown on organized‑crime syndicates that operate across borders. Central to the latest phase of the operation is the pursuit of Gourdi Barar, a gang figure accused of masterminding the June 2023 killing of Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Investigators have linked Barar to a broader network involved in drug trafficking, extortion, kidnapping and forced‑labor schemes. The recent leak of an audio recording in which Barar allegedly acknowledges his role in Nijjar’s murder has provided investigators with a new line of inquiry.

Barar, who remains wanted in India for the murder of singer Sidhu Moosewala and several other violent offences, is believed to be coordinating activities from the United States. Authorities say he has close ties to Lawrence Bischnoi, a convicted gangster currently behind bars, and to other members of a sprawling international cartel.

The operation has already resulted in the indictment of 37 individuals across the United States, Canada and Europe on charges ranging from homicide to narcotics smuggling. Officials stress that the crackdown is part of a larger effort to dismantle the financial and logistical infrastructure that enables cross‑border crime.

While the leak adds a sensational element to the Nijjar case, diplomatic tensions continue to simmer. Canada maintains that Indian involvement cannot be ruled out, whereas New Delhi reiterates that it had no role in the assassination. The ongoing investigation under Operation Hardball is expected to bring further clarity to these contested narratives.
