U.S. alliance may shift as Seoul eyes greater combat command in drills

South Korea’s president signalled a possible recalibration of the long‑standing U.S.‑South Korea military partnership. By seeking full OPCON authority, Lee Jae Myung aims to place Seoul in the lead role for combined forces during a wartime scenario.

The request for OPCON handover was voiced during a cabinet meeting on August 18, with Lee stating that the process must be completed before his term expires in 2030. He argued that a sovereign command structure will strengthen deterrence against North Korean missile and nuclear programs.

The timing aligns with the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, scheduled to run through August 27, which are designed to test joint command capabilities. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has ordered a reduction in joint drills, prompting the Pentagon to evaluate the impact on regional security and the OPCON transition.
