US Alerts: China Backs Russia, Altering Baltic Views on Beijing

In a pointed congressional hearing, top US lawmakers and diplomats cautioned that Beijing's aid to Moscow's military is forcing a strategic rethink in the Baltic region. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – NATO's exposed eastern sentinels – are decoupling economically from China, viewing it through the lens of Ukraine's ongoing struggle. The House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee delved into how these post-World War I independent states, nestled on the Baltic Sea's eastern edge, face dual threats from Russian aggression and Chinese influence. State Department's Christopher Smith revealed Beijing's pivotal role: providing 80% of dual-use items fueling Russia's defense production. 'Baltic governments are reconsidering ties with China because of this support,' Smith told lawmakers. This recalibration unfolds as Europe frets over Ukraine's war dragging into year four, with China as Russia's indispensable partner. Rep. William Keating, the ranking member, observed China's keen interest in NATO's eastern defenses, suggesting implications for Taiwan. He advocated containment as the US approach to Beijing, a view echoed by Smith, who confirmed China's meticulous study of the conflict. Concerns over Chinese economic leverage dominated Republican interventions. Rep. Young Kim referenced Lithuania's bold 2021 move to host a Taiwanese office under that name, sparking Beijing's retaliation. Even with softening tones from Vilnius lately, Smith praised the Baltics' resilience. These former Soviet republics joined NATO in 2004 and have since surged defense budgets, surpassing targets while aiding Ukraine generously. They've purged Chinese tech from networks and aligned with America on supply chain security. As Rep. Randy Fine put it, China is alienating the Baltics despite the geographic gap. With Russia potentially probing NATO's flanks, these nations exemplify committed allies in a tense geopolitical landscape.
