The United Nations has voiced strong support for the launch of phase two in the American-brokered Gaza ceasefire initiative, viewing it as a vital move to ease the plight of civilians caught in the crossfire. Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Farhan Haq, praised the development during a recent briefing.
Detailing the plan’s second stage, announced on January 14 under President Trump’s 20-point framework, Haq pointed to key elements like setting up a temporary technical Palestinian authority in Gaza and a national oversight committee for administration. He stressed, ‘Steps that mitigate civilian hardships, support rebuilding efforts, and advance political resolutions are unequivocally welcome.’
Referencing Security Council Resolution 2803 (2025), the statement insisted on compliance with UN mandates and international humanitarian law. The UN pledged continued backing for endeavors promoting an end to occupation and strife between Israelis and Palestinians, in line with the two-state solution enshrined in international agreements.
Gaza’s residents face mounting perils from the elements. OCHA reports indicate around 800,000 individuals, representing 40% of the total population, are stranded in high-risk flood zones. Winter downpours have compromised shelter integrity, while in Gaza City, more than 60 apartment blocks risk imminent structural failure.
As the world watches this unfolding diplomacy, the UN’s approval signals potential momentum. Successful execution could mark a turning point, transforming tentative progress into sustainable stability for the region.
