UN Pushes for Renewed Negotiations Between Tehran and Washington

The United Nations has renewed its appeal for Iran and the United States to resume talks that could lead to a durable solution of the nuclear issue. In a briefing, UN spokesperson Stephen Dujarric conveyed that Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres wants both sides to come back to the negotiating table as soon as possible, stressing that a military outcome is unacceptable.

The original June 17 memorandum of understanding gave the two parties a 60‑day window to hammer out a final agreement, a deadline that has now expired. While the MOU allowed for a mutually agreed extension, no such extension was reached. President Donald Trump, speaking from the White House, reiterated that the United States will continue to block Iran’s path to a nuclear weapon, but he also signaled that any future deal must satisfy U.S. conditions. He claimed that the United States maintains full control over the Strait of Hormuz through a naval blockade and warned against any joint Iranian‑Omani initiatives that could threaten that control.
