UN fact‑finding mission links RSF actions in El Fasher to genocide
A United Nations fact‑finding mission released in February 2025 concluded that the actions of the Rapid Support Forces in El Fasher constitute strong evidence of genocide against non‑Arab groups. The mission’s analysis aligns with Amnesty International’s earlier report, which documented mass killings, rape, forced slavery and the deliberate targeting of children.
The RSF seized El Fasher in late October 2024 after an 18‑month blockade, effectively removing the last major Sudanese army position in Darfur. The occupation was marked by widespread violence that resulted in thousands of fatalities and massive civilian displacement.
Amnesty International’s investigation, based on 247 interviews—including 208 survivors—alongside documentary and satellite data, described the campaign as an orchestrated effort to eradicate non‑Arab communities. The report described the language used by RSF fighters as humiliating and dehumanising.
Both the UN mission and Amnesty call for an immediate cease‑fire and the deployment of an international security force to protect civilians. Secretary‑General Agnes Callamard urged the international community to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete steps to prevent further atrocities and hold perpetrators accountable.
