UN Deputy Chief Urges Reform to Amplify Global South Voices
Beijing, October 25: Guy Bernard Ryder, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, has called for reform of the UN so that the voice of the Global South is fully heard. He also praised China's contribution to global governance during the 2026 World Governance Forum in Xiong'an.
Ryder was speaking with reporters on October 24 in the Xiong'an New Area of Hebei Province. He said China holds an important place in global governance and that its four global initiatives match the goals of the United Nations.
He described China's visionary approach as worthy of praise, adding that the international community needs it urgently.
The UN official said the organisation has always viewed China as a steadfast partner. He explained that China's four initiatives span development, security, civilization and governance, and are consistent with the issues and aims of the UN and other multilateral systems.
Ryder pointed to China's close bond with the Global South as a distinctive feature of its global governance system. To ensure that developing nations have a greater say and better protection of their interests, he appealed for comprehensive reform of the United Nations.
