UN Agencies Distribute Millions of Rat‑Killing Doses in Gaza

Following alarming health data that showed 83 percent of evaluated locations in Gaza plagued by rats and parasites, UN agencies have accelerated the distribution of rodenticide. The daily shipment now reaches nine metric tons, a figure made possible by logistics support from the United Arab Emirates.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs stresses that essential equipment – from spare parts to engine oil – must be continually accessible to prevent interruptions in pest‑control activities. Moreover, waste‑management partners need clearance to reach landfills in zones where Israeli forces have imposed movement restrictions, affecting roughly two‑thirds of Gaza’s territory.

Water scarcity remains acute. UNICEF is assisting in the drilling of a main well in Khan Younis, projected to serve around 7,000 individuals. Simultaneously, the agency is engaged in cleaning the Sheikh Ajleen wastewater treatment plant, a facility that previously catered to 700,000 residents before hostilities disrupted services.

Education initiatives also feature in the UN’s broader response. More than 600 temporary learning spaces have been registered for an estimated 430,000 children, representing about 56 percent of the school‑age population. While remedial programs aim to prepare these children for the upcoming academic year, many still lack stable learning environments.
