UKMTO Reports Persistent IRGC Activities and Vessel Attacks in Hormuz

London, Aug 10 – According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has kept up a series of disruptive actions in the Hormuz Strait. The agency noted that commercial shipping continues to be threatened by a mix of harassment, drone surveillance and direct attacks.

On Saturday a tanker flying the flag of the United Arab Emirates was deliberately targeted, underscoring the ongoing danger. UKMTO said that the number of ships transiting the strait on a daily basis has dwindled to a single‑digit count, far below normal levels.

IRGC tactics listed by the agency include radio communications aimed at vessels, attempts to stop or divert ships, drone flights over the waterway and focused monitoring of selected targets. These measures signal Tehran’s determination to retain a visible footprint on a key global trade route.

The threat extends beyond intimidation. UKMTO reported projectile strikes and near‑miss explosions, especially in the Omani maritime zones of Limah, Khasab and Kumzar. Additionally, the presence of undetected sea mines continues to endanger navigation.

Because Hormuz is a strategic conduit for petroleum products from the Persian Gulf to worldwide markets, prolonged unrest could affect not only regional stability but also global oil supply chains and pricing.

The agency has therefore kept the maritime security risk rating at “serious” and urges all vessels to adopt heightened vigilance while transiting the strait.
