UK parliamentarians call for transparent inquiry into POK clashes

London – On 30 July, several British lawmakers expressed deep unease over the rapidly deteriorating security situation in Pakistan‑occupied Kashmir (POK). Official sources indicate that more than 40 civilians have been shot dead and many others gravely wounded by Pakistani security units.

Labour MP Liam Byrne described the alleged firing on peaceful crowds as "a matter of grave concern" and denounced the communication shutdown and human‑rights abuses as "totally unacceptable."

The All‑Party Parliamentary Group on Kashmir issued two principal demands: an urgent meeting with Pakistan’s High Commissioner in London to demand an immediate stop to the violence, and a briefing with senior Foreign Office ministers to ensure the UK holds Islamabad accountable to its UN obligations.

Another parliamentarian, Adnan Hussain, termed the civilian deaths a "tragedy" and urged a "full, independent and transparent" investigation into any illegal use of force. He appealed to all parties to exercise restraint, protect civilian lives, and seek a durable peace through constructive dialogue.

Amnesty International’s Secretary‑General Agnes Callamard reiterated the need for an unfettered flow of information, urging the removal of internet and mobile service bans and demanding access for independent monitors and journalists to evaluate the situation accurately.
