Typhoon No. 15 Expected to Bring Torrential Rain and Landslides in Eastern Japan

Meteorological agencies have warned that Typhoon No. 15 will unleash torrential rain across eastern Japan on 11 August, creating conditions ripe for landslides and flash flooding. The system is moving northwestward, with the highest probability of making landfall near the southern part of Tohoku and the northern Kanto prefectures.

Rainfall intensity is projected to exceed 150 mm in some hilly districts, dramatically raising the likelihood of slope failures. Residents in mountainous villages are being asked to stay indoors and avoid travel on vulnerable roads.

Rivers in the affected zones are expected to swell, potentially breaching banks and inundating adjacent farmland and residential areas. Local fire and rescue services have pre‑positioned equipment to respond quickly to any water‑related emergencies.

Wind gusts could reach 120 km/h, putting roofs, power lines and high‑rise structures at risk. Along the Pacific shoreline, sea‑swell heights may surpass 4 meters, posing a threat to small craft and coastal installations.
