Will Trump’s Pivot to North Korea Undo South Korean Alliance?

President Trump’s recent outreach to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, juxtaposed with a sharp reduction of joint U.S.–South Korea drills, raises questions about the future of the long‑standing bilateral security pact.

After sharing a 2019 photo with Kim on social media, Trump reiterated that his relationship with the North Korean leader remains “very good.” At the same time, he publicly noted South Korea’s refusal to join U.S. efforts to contain Iran’s nuclear program, describing the response as “no thanks.”

The president’s directive to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to limit the exercises cites both fiscal concerns and the belief that the drills unfairly provoke the North. Yet, North Korea has previously condemned the maneuvers as preparations for war.

South Korean officials argue that the combined drills are essential for maintaining readiness and sending a clear deterrent signal. The decision to scale them back could signal a shift in U.S. priorities, potentially emboldening Pyongyang.

Observers warn that while personal diplomacy with Kim may open dialogue, eroding the alliance with Seoul could weaken the broader U.S. strategy in East Asia.
