Trump’s November Trip Aims to Reinforce US Ties in Southeast Asia

The upcoming November delegation of former President Donald Trump to Manila and Shenzhen underscores a renewed U.S. push to deepen partnerships across Southeast Asia. Trump is scheduled to attend the ASEAN summit on November 16, followed immediately by the APEC summit in Shenzhen from November 17‑19. The dual engagement is intended to showcase American resolve to its regional allies while promoting initiatives tied to trade, investment, and maritime security. Analysts anticipate a high‑profile meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, which would be the third in‑person dialogue between the two leaders this calendar year, following earlier encounters in Beijing and Washington. The Philippines, hosting the 49th ASEAN summit, has issued a three‑day public holiday to facilitate the event, which also incorporates the East Asia Summit involving India and the United States. In July, Secretary of State Antony Blinken indicated that Trump was being briefed on the summit’s agenda, and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. renewed his invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, hoping the two leaders might converge in Manila. Their potential meeting would take place against a backdrop of strained U.S.–India trade talks and India’s continued procurement of Russian crude oil.
