Trump downplays Hormuz strategic value while criticizing Seoul's refusal to help

President Donald Trump addressed the media on August 20, stating that the United States can quickly move to impose "strong" sanctions on Iran if the Hormuz Strait conflict escalates. While warning of economic measures, he also argued that the strait's significance has waned due to increased U.S. oil output and new supply corridors.

"Ships still pass through, but the world isn’t as reliant on Hormuz as it once was," Trump said, adding that any future reduction in traffic would be "noticeable".

Turning to Asia, the president expressed anger at South Korea for declining to aid Washington in protecting the waterway. He pointed out that South Korea imports roughly 60 percent of its oil via Hormuz, yet the government allegedly showed little interest in cooperating during a period of extensive military drills aimed at deterring North Korea.

When pressed about the possibility of re‑engaging North Korea on nuclear issues, Trump sidestepped the question, noting only that his personal ties with Kim Jong‑un contribute to regional security.
