In a characteristic display of self-aggrandizement, former US President Donald Trump has asserted that his tariff policies served as a powerful tool for conflict resolution, claiming he used them to settle seven wars. Speaking at an event in Huntsville, Alabama, where he announced the relocation of the US Space Command headquarters, Trump lauded tariffs as a successful negotiating strategy, stating they strengthened the US economy and aided in resolving international disputes. He also criticized the Biden administration, while highlighting the benefits of his own tariff approach. Trump declared that the United States is a global leader, attributing the nation’s economic success to tariffs and other trade measures, which he claimed enabled him to be a strong negotiator.
“I settled seven wars, and numerous of those wars were because of trade,” he stated, further adding that several trade deals were achieved because of tariffs, granting the US significant negotiating leverage. Trump also defended the imposition of 50% tariffs on Indian imports, suggesting the trade relationship between the two countries had been imbalanced for a long time. He noted, however, that the US and India currently maintain a positive relationship.
