Trump Backs Seafood Label to Support American Fishermen

Washington, October 24: President Donald Trump has unveiled a plan to label seafood produced in the United States, saying the measure will give American fishermen and the seafood industry a fairer footing in the market. The proposal is designed to help domestic producers compete with foreign rivals.

Trump made the announcement at a Republican election rally in Fort Myers, Florida. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. spoke at the same event and said that some overseas seafood producers rely on practices that damage the environment. He added that their products reach American shelves under conditions that hurt domestic fishermen.

Kennedy explained that the government plans to introduce a clear new label showing whether seafood was prepared in America or imported from abroad. He said the president was announcing a label that will reveal that a product was made in the United States, so consumers can make a responsible and well-informed decision.

Trump presented the initiative as part of a wider push to back the maritime economy along Florida's Gulf coast. He described it as a historic step in support of a major industry on the Gulf of America, and then invited Kennedy to outline the details. Trump also commended Kennedy's long-standing ties with fishing communities.

According to Kennedy, American fishermen operate under some of the most demanding environmental and sustainability regulations anywhere in the world. Because foreign producers often do not face the same rules, he argued, US fishermen are placed at a financial disadvantage. "Commercial fishermen in this country are subject to the strictest environmental rules and must meet tough sustainable production standards, which makes it harder for them to compete with fishermen elsewhere," he said.

He focused in particular on shrimp farming in Vietnam and Cambodia. Kennedy claimed that some producers there damage mangrove forests and use chemicals that are rejected by many foreign markets. He said some mangrove zones are enclosed, fish in those areas are killed off, and farming continues for several seasons, affecting the wider environment. He further alleged that shrimp raised through these methods carry very high amounts of antibiotics and disinfectant chemicals.

"These shrimp contain so many antibiotics and disinfectants that several European countries will not accept them," Kennedy said. He claimed that such products are later shipped to the United States, forcing domestic shrimp producers to compete with cheaper imported goods. However, his speech did not offer any evidence to back these claims against foreign producers.

Kennedy also mentioned the pink shrimp industry in Fort Myers and across Florida, calling it a significant center of the American commercial fishing sector. He said the government is working to strengthen fisheries infrastructure and create more market opportunities for domestic growers.

Kennedy said the new label will help shoppers understand whether the seafood they buy was truly made in America. Yet Trump and Kennedy did not say when the labeling plan would begin. Nor did they clarify whether labeling would be mandatory or voluntary.

The details of the plan also remain unclear. No federal agency was named as the overseer of the program, and no standards were outlined for products seeking the 'American-made' label. Origin labeling for seafood is an important issue in global trade, as it can shape consumer choices, market entry, and business costs.
