Trump Administration Says No Shift in North Korea Disarmament Objective

Seoul, August 27 – The Trump administration has reiterated that its primary objective concerning North Korea remains the complete elimination of the regime’s nuclear weapons. A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department told Yonhap News Agency on Wednesday that there has been "no change" in the United States’ policy.

The comment arrived amid heightened speculation about a possible summit between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un. Last week, President Trump declined to confirm whether any future talks would be conditioned on North Korea’s nuclear disarmament, leading to rumors that Washington might pivot toward a narrower arms‑control agenda.

The State Department’s clarification dispelled those rumors, underscoring that the United States continues to view full denuclearisation as the cornerstone of its diplomatic strategy. Pyongyang, however, continues to portray its nuclear program as an indispensable safeguard and has shown no willingness to relinquish its weapons.

The recent reduction in the scope of joint U.S.–South Korean military drills has also prompted questions about whether Washington is easing its stance ahead of negotiations. South Korea’s foreign ministry reaffirmed that both Seoul and Washington remain steadfast in their commitment to a nuclear‑free Korean Peninsula.
